Founded by former Raytheon engineer Ghonhee Lee, Katalyst Space Technologies is proving the viability of in-space satellite repair through a high-stakes NASA telescope rescue.


Katalyst Space Technologies was awarded a $30 million NASA contract for a high-profile rescue mission to save the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, a space telescope facing atmospheric reentry due to heightened solar activity.  The mission is actively underway.  Katalyst’s LINK servicing spacecraft launched in July to rendezvous with, dock onto, and boost the unprepared observatory – an orbital re-boost sequence expected to conclude in autumn.

Building on this momentum, the startup raised $12 million in a funding round led by Geodesic Capital to develop its NEXUS robotic spacecraft and support a geostationary orbit servicing demonstration mission planned for 2027.  This effort marks a crucial step toward proving that high-value satellites can be upgraded, repaired, and sustained in deep orbit rather than left abandoned after hardware failures or fuel depletion.

Headquartered in Flagstaff, Arizona, Katalyst Space Technologies was established in 2020 to shift the space economy from simple orbital deployment to active in-space operations.  The aerospace startup designs robotic spacecraft, modular hardware, and software that enable satellite life extension, post-launch hardware upgrades, and orbit repositioning to make space assets flexible and sustainable.

The company was founded by chief executive officer Ghonhee Lee.  Lee earned his bachelor of science in aerospace engineering with an emphasis on astronautics from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in 2018.  Following graduation, he began his career as a Guidance, Navigation, and Control engineer at Raytheon Missile Systems, contributing to defense programs alongside the United States Navy and Missile Defense Agency.  Expanding his leadership in the industry, Lee served as the inaugural Industry Chair for NASA’s Consortium for Space Mobility and On-Orbit Servicing, Assembly, and Manufacturing Capabilities for a year beginning in 2024.

Looking ahead, Katalyst plans to scale its operations beyond individual servicing demonstrations to build a broader infrastructure for responsive space operations.  As demand grows across both commercial and national security sectors, the company aims to expand its fleet, broaden its software capabilities, and establish routine in-orbit servicing standards that redefine how assets are maintained across diverse orbital regimes.
